Singapore Management University has introduced an innovative Master of Data Science in Economics (MDSE) programme designed to equip students for careers in the fast-changing AI economy. The programme is the first in Singapore to combine economics with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science in one postgraduate qualification.
The course targets individuals who want to move beyond building AI systems and learn how to use data-driven insights for business, finance, and public policy challenges.
As AI tools become widely embedded across industries, organisations are increasingly looking for professionals who can interpret and apply data effectively rather than only create algorithms.
The MDSE programme was developed to meet this growing market demand.
Daniel Preve, Associate Professor of Economics and MDSE Programme Director, noted that while many conventional data science degrees focus mostly on predictive models, the MDSE gives equal weight to causal reasoning and analytical interpretation.
A key feature of the programme is its practical, industry-aligned approach. Students will learn to integrate econometrics, AI methods, and machine learning tools to address real-world economic and financial problems.
During the programme, students will build skills in:
The course also exposes students to working with varied data types, including numerical, text, and visual information.
The MDSE programme welcomes both new graduates and mid-career professionals. Importantly, applicants do not need prior coding or programming background to join.
Students start with foundational topics such as probability and statistical learning before moving into more advanced AI and data analytics subjects.
Elective modules also let students pursue professional certifications.
With businesses and governments rapidly adopting AI technologies, demand is growing for professionals who can blend technical expertise with economic and strategic insight.
Professor Preve pointed out that although AI is reshaping workplaces, human interpretation, judgement, and contextual understanding remain crucial.
The launch of the MDSE programme shows Singapore Management University’s wider commitment to developing industry-relevant AI education.
These efforts aim to prepare professionals with future-ready skills for the modern digital economy.
SMU continues to build its international standing in business and economics education. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the university placed among the world’s top 40 institutions for Business & Management Studies and ranked 52nd globally for Economics & Econometrics.
To improve accessibility, SMU also offers scholarships and financial aid schemes for eligible students.
Applications for the first August 2026 MDSE intake are now open.
