Company Overview
We are a staffing and workforce solutions firm helping one of our clients, a growing organization in the healthcare technology sector, build out its engineering team. Our client is hiring a Node.js Backend Developer to join a fully remote team based anywhere in the United States. The engagement can be structured as full-time, part-time, or contract work, depending on what fits the candidate best.
Job Summary
Our client needs a hands-on Node.js Backend Developer to build and maintain the server-side systems behind their web and mobile products. You’ll spend your time writing and shipping APIs, tuning performance, and partnering with frontend and product teams to keep the backend fast and dependable. If you like digging into performance problems, take pride in clean and documented code, and enjoy keeping pace with where Node.js is headed, this role is worth a look.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain the backend systems and business logic that power the product, using Node.js, with an eye toward performance, security, and long-term code health.
- Design RESTful API endpoints and wire up third-party services so the web and mobile apps have what they need on the backend.
- Pair with frontend engineers, product managers, and design to make sure what’s built on the server actually supports a smooth user experience.
- Write code that’s easy for the next engineer to pick up — reusable, documented, and consistent with the team’s standards and Git workflow.
- Track down and fix performance bottlenecks, tighten up slow database queries, and add caching where it makes a real difference.
- Work in MongoDB, MySQL, or PostgreSQL to shape data models, tune queries, and keep data accurate across systems.
- Bake security and data-protection practices into the backend so the application stays compliant and resistant to common vulnerabilities.
- Debug and resolve issues that show up in production, keeping the application stable for end users.
- Review teammates’ code, mentor newer developers, and pitch in on deployments and process improvements.
- Keep an eye on where the Node.js ecosystem is moving and bring new tools or patterns back to the team when they’re worth adopting.
Required Skills
- Solid, provable experience building backend systems in Node.js, including frameworks like Express.
- Comfortable designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
- Hands-on experience with at least one of MongoDB, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
- Working knowledge of frontend basics — HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript — enough to collaborate smoothly with frontend engineers.
- Understands asynchronous programming in JavaScript and knows how to avoid its common traps.
- Comfortable working with Git and standard version-control workflows.
AI Experience
- Using AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar) to move faster on development, debugging, or documentation is a nice-to-have.
- You don’t need hands-on AI/ML experience for this role, but awareness of how AI tooling is showing up in backend workflows is a plus.
Managerial Experience
- Has led or regularly participated in code reviews, and is comfortable coaching less experienced developers.
- Works well across frontend, product, and design teams to keep everyone aligned on scope and timelines.
Operational Experience
- Comfortable being the one who gets paged when something breaks in production — debugging under pressure and restoring stability.
- Has been part of a team’s deployment process and contributed to ongoing process improvements.
- Has a track record of measurably improving performance through caching, query tuning, or fixing bottlenecks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience working as a Node.js developer or in a comparable backend engineering role.
Certifications
- Certifications in Node.js, JavaScript, or a major cloud platform are a nice bonus but not required.
